WISER-50 Mobile Wireless Network Emulator
The WISER-50 is a unique package of tools to emulate
mobile networks in real-time. WISER is the result of a partnership between
Telcordia and Candela Technologies. Candela provides the core LANforge emulation
framework while Telcordia provides the mobility, radio waveform emulation and
scenario creation tools. The end result is an integrated package that currently emulates
up to 50 mobile nodes. The nodes may be connected by emulated ground-to-ground TDMA
radio links or ground-to-satellite TDMA links. OSPF virtual routers run on each
emulated node to provide dynamic route propagation and discovery.
The WISER-50 includes a 24 port switch that allows users to inject traffic for a
maximum of 24 nodes concurrently. QoS settings and emulated back-pressure from the
wireless links allows realistic experimentation with applications that take
advantage of ToS/QoS fields in the IP protocol.
The WISER-50 chassis is configured with 16GB RAM, 1 quad-core E3 3.5Ghz processor and a 200+GB
hard drive. The system runs a slightly modified version of 64-bit Fedora Linux and
supports standard VGA, keyboard and mouse interfaces for easy console/desktop
access. The WISER-50 is relatively noisy, so it is better for a data center
deployment than a desktop environment. Other hardware form factors are available.
An additional Windows PC is required for scenario creation and the optional
TIREM (Terrain Integration Rough Earth Model) package. This PC is not
included by default: Talk to your sales representative if you wish this supplied
as part of the package.

Quick Start Guide
- Connect Management ethernet port on the WISER machine to Management network or Management PC. If
connecting directly to a PC, an ethernet cross-over cable might be necessary.
Alternatively, connect a VGA monitor, a keyboard and a mouse to the chassis and manage it locally.
- Connect 802.1Q VLAN switch's trunk port to eth2 of the WISER machine. This is
the VLAN trunk between the WISER machine and the VLAN switch.
- Connect Clients to the ports on the 802.1Q VLAN switch. Each port on the switch is
configured to bridge regular un-tagged ethernet frames to one of the VLANs on the
trunk port leading to the WISER machine: Port 1 is connected to Node 1, etc.
- Connect power to the units and turn them on. The order in which they are booted
does not matter.
- Install WISER GUI and scenario creation packages on a separate Windows machine.
The LANforge GUI may be installed as well, but is not required to use WISER.
- The WISER-50 should now boot. If DHCP is enabled on the Management network,
the WISER-50 machine will automatically acquire an IP address. If DHCP is not available,
the IP address will be set to 192.168.1.101 by the LANforge start scripts.
- Start the WISER GUI on the management PC and connect to the WISER system's management IP.
