Linux Drivers and Adapters

The LANforge system can severely stress the capabilities of many ethernet drivers and cards under Linux. This page is an attempt to give detailed information on the performance and stability of various ethernet cards and drivers that we have used. We welcome feedback and any updates to this information that you may have.

If you are a driver writer and wish to fix any of the broken cards, we'll probably loan or give you the card! Likewise, if you want us to abuse your card/driver, send them to me, or download LANforge and test them yourself!

These work very well, highly recommended.

AdapterdriverLink Negotiation & Other Notes
Intel pro/1000 (all models) e1000 Supports all features, including auto-negotiate, jumbo frames, 802.1Q VLANs, and receive-all-packets (which allows the NIC, when running the Candela Linux kernel, to receive ethernet frames with bad CRC and other errors on demand.)

Eth Chip: GD82559
EEPRO: v1.09j-7

Linux Drivers and Adapters (continued)

These work OK for most purposes, but have issues.
AdapterdriverLink Negotiation & Other Notes
Intel EtherExpress-PRO-B
PHY: DP83840
Eth Chip: S82557
EEPRO: v1.09j-7
Rev: 1.36
Has problems with changing from Auto-negotiation to Fixed and back. If you don't mess with it too much, though, it works OK. Runs fast when working!
Compaq Netelligent 2-port
Rev. 16
TLAN v1.14a Cannot set link speed to any fixed rates. Mostly seems to work though.

These may work in some cases, but generally have problems.
AdapterdriverLink Negotiation & Other Notes
ZNYX ZX346Q
PHY: ??
Eth Chip: 21143-PD
Tulip: 0.9.15-pre1 Will not auto-negotiate correctly. Cannot be set to fixed speed with mii-diag. The driver is known to be busted at this point, and will hopefully get better shortly. Expensive too.

Adaptec ANA-6944A
Eth Chip: 21140-AF
Tulip: 0.9.15-pre1 Completely locks up my computer when I 'insmod tulip'. Becker said it might be interrupt routing issues.
